ifo DICE Report 2/2018
In this issue we present and compare different wealth taxation structures and discuss the viability of wealth taxes.
The Impact of Wealth Taxation
The interest in wealth taxation both in academia and politics has increased considerably in recent years in response to the growth in wealth concentration and income inequality that have occurred in most OECD countries. Most prominently, Piketty (2013) proposed a world wealth tax as an instrument for reducing global inequality. The new DICE Report assesses the viability of wealth taxes against the backdrop of the new theoretical literature on optimal capital taxation and experiences with wealth and inheritance taxes in several countries.
